Requirements: Successful completion of an accredited Pediatric Residency; Board Certification in Pediatric Critical Care/General Pediatrics or Board Certification in Pediatrics with subspecialty training in Pediatric Critical Care; Possession of a license to practice medicine in the state of NC; and Possession of a valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate.
Job duties: Evaluate and treat new pediatric admissions and intervene to prevent further deterioration. Assist with caring for patients admitted to the pediatric floor, as needed. Diagnose and stabilize critically ill medical and surgical patients with impending or active organ failure (respiratory, cardiac, neurologic, hepatic, gastrointestinal, hematologic, renal, etc.) or life-threatening electrolyte and acid-base disturbances, or poisonings. Proactively communicate changes in patient status to the appropriate physician(s) and obtain specialty consultation when necessary. Perform and integrate multilevel specialized tests and treatments aimed to improve the overall outcomes for patients. Prescribe medications and titrate medications and therapy, using data from physical assessment findings and appropriate monitoring devices. Respond to patient alarms and alerts. Initiate advanced cardiac life support and supports code responders. Initiate, manage, and wean patients from mechanical ventilation using a variety of techniques and ventilators. Proactively communicate and advise patient and family to promote understanding of test results, treatment options and procedures. Effectively communicate with members of the Pediatric teams in a collegial manner to provide safe and error-free care during routine care and emergent conditions. Initiate end-of-life discussions with patients and/or families when appropriate and assist with transitions to appropriate levels of care. Initiate ethics consults proactively when appropriate and support organ donation conversations as appropriate. Participate in monitoring the quality, safety and appropriateness of patient care. Institute critical care best practices/bundles and facilitate the achievement of top 10% performance for key critical care performance metrics and hospital acquired conditions, such as ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP), catheter associated UTI, central line associated blood stream infection (CLABSI), and sepsis. Serve as preceptor for medical students and residents on the service as required. Participate in educational programs to increase the clinical skills of Pediatric nurse practitioners/physician assistants, nurses, ancillary personnel and other physicians in caring for critically ill patients. Participate in Patient Experience training and implement service standards into daily job performance to contribute to achieving top performance in Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Survey. Maintain strictest patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations. Attend meetings and participate in the Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE), reporting established performance indicators to the Departmental and Clinical Performance Improvement Committee (DPIC and CPIC), as required by the Medical Staff.
