Massachusetts – Psychiatry Nurse Practitioner
• The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will follow a consultation liaison model, where they enhance the primary care clinician psychoactive medication management by providing verbal and written consultation on the primary care physician PCP’s initial medication decisions, medication changes, and the management of routine side effects.
• For more chronic, complicated cases, the Psychiatric Nurse Prescriber may assess the patient directly to develop a medication regimen. In most cases, the primary care clinician would take over renewal of prescriptions, once the patient is stabilized.
• As a member of the behavioral health and primary care team, the Psychiatric Nurse Prescriber will discuss, assess and treat patients that are part of the primary care practice.
• Makes assessment of patient that need individual evaluation which includes, but is not limited to, presenting problem, medical history, allergies, psycho-social problems, medications, and current living arrangement of individuals and their families.
• Orders and interprets diagnostic tests and plans appropriate disposition/treatment in collaboration with
• Primary Physician and collaborating psychiatrist.
•Participates in a multi-disciplinary approach directed toward patient needs and care. Consults with other health care team members (i.e. case manager, family planning, etc.) Involves family members and/or significant others in plan of care, as appropriate.
• Provides care following approved protocols in a safe manner. Evaluates care provided and patient response to recommended course of treatment.
• Provides an opportunity to the patient, significant other, and other family members to gain knowledge about wellness, illness and rehabilitation, with sensitivity to the patient’s level of understanding, culture, age and language. Documents all teaching material given to the patients, or family members including their response, comprehension and need for further follow-up.
• Demonstrates clinical competence and professional commitment in Psychiatric Nursing Practice by adhering to established standards of practice and utilizing appropriate scientific principles.
• Participates in the orientation/teaching process, when requested, to assure that new employee/student will become familiar with policies, procedures, and expectations for the job role.
• On a regular basis participates in ongoing quality improvement activities related to individual, team, and Organizational performance improvement.
• Travel between sites may be required. Makes home/hospital visits as appropriate.
• Collaborates with psychiatrist for patient care and regular case review.
Experience/Education
• Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Nursing
• Graduate of an accredited Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner program.
• Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse License and Registration.
• Current Nurse Practitioner Certification and Registration.
• Certified or eligible for certification by recognized specialty organization.
• Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience preferred.
• Minimum one (1) year of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner experience preferred.
• Ability to provide care to adolescents preferred.
• Bi-lingual (Spanish) strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to problem-solve using critical thinking.
• Demonstrated basic computer skills including typing.
• Demonstrated organizational, clinical, and interpersonal skills.
